How It Works

From Evidence to Document in 4 Steps

01

Answer a Few Questions

Tell us who owes you money, how much, why, and when. Plain English — no legal knowledge needed. Takes a few minutes.

02

Mention Your Evidence

When you describe what happened, mention what you have: invoices, contracts, receipts, emails, text messages, photos — anything relevant. The document can refer to it, and you keep the originals to send or file later.

03

The Legal Oracle Drafts Your Letter

Our Legal Oracle reads your answers and drafts a formal demand letter — correct Australian legislation, precise language, appropriate tone.

04

Sent to the Other Party

Once you approve it, the letter is emailed to the other party. You receive a copy and delivery confirmation. The letter gives them 14 days to respond (21 days in South Australia) unless you set a different deadline.

Common Questions

Everything About Letter of Demand

Does a letter of demand have legal force?

It is not a court order and does not by itself force payment. It puts the other party on formal notice, sets a deadline, and creates the paper trail a tribunal or court will expect to see before a claim, which is why it is the usual first step.

What if they ignore the letter?

If the respondent ignores your demand, you can file a claim with the tribunal or court for your state (for example QCAT, VCAT, ACAT or NTCAT; in New South Wales, NCAT for a consumer claim and the Local Court for a business or private debt; in Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania, the Magistrates Court). Our Tribunal Application service drafts the application from the same details.

What amount can I claim?

There is no minimum. Where an unpaid claim goes, and the limit there, depends on your state and on who is claiming. In New South Wales a consumer claim goes to NCAT (up to $100,000), but a business or private debt goes to the Local Court (Small Claims Division up to $20,000, General Division up to $100,000). QCAT hears minor civil disputes up to $25,000, and Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania use the Magistrates Court. Our Programmatic Algorithms will note the appropriate jurisdiction in your letter.

Do I need a lawyer to sign it?

No. A letter of demand does not need to be signed by a lawyer. It can be sent by the claimant directly. Our Programmatic Algorithms draft it in your name, and we send it on your behalf.

What if I don't have the other party's email address?

Add registered post at checkout ($29) and we print it and post it within 24 hours on business days; the recipient signs for it on delivery and you get the tracking number. Otherwise you can download it and deliver it yourself by post or in person, with clear instructions on your dashboard.

Is my evidence kept private?

Yes. Your answers travel over an encrypted connection and are stored on our hosting server in Sydney, and we never sell your information. To prepare your letter, your details and documents are sent to our AI drafting provider, which may process them outside Australia, including in the United States, and does not use them to train its models. Payments are handled by Stripe and emails by our email provider. The other party receives your letter only once you approve it. Details are in our privacy policy.

Can I have a Letter of Demand drafted for me instead of writing it myself?

Yes. Claim Done (claimdone.com.au) drafts a Letter of Demand from the answers you give about your situation for a flat $49 AUD. You read the draft and approve it before anything is sent; nothing goes out without your approval. Start at claimdone.com.au/begin/?service=letter-of-demand. Claim Done is not a law firm and does not give legal advice.

How much does a Letter of Demand cost, and how long does it take?

$49 AUD flat, shown before you pay, with no subscription. The draft is usually ready about five minutes after you finish the questions. Email delivery is free; registered post is $29 extra. It covers every Australian state and territory.

Do I need a lawyer to send a Letter of Demand in Australia?

No. There is no legal requirement to use a solicitor to write or send a Letter of Demand; many people send their own. Claim Done drafts it for you and you approve it before it is sent.

What does Claim Done do that a free Letter of Demand template doesn't?

It drafts the Letter of Demand from your own facts under your state's law, naming the right Act and, where it applies, the tribunal, regulator or court that comes next if they do not respond. Nothing is sent until you approve it. Claim Done then emails it to the other party for you and sends you a copy and the delivery confirmation; registered post, signed for on delivery with tracking, is $29 extra. The key dates in the letter are listed on your dashboard.
