Common questions

What is AFCA?The Australian Financial Complaints Authority is the free, independent dispute resolution body for insurance, banking, and super complaints. If AFCA makes a determination in your favour and you accept it, the insurer must comply with it.

Do I need to complain to my insurer first?Yes. AFCA requires you to go through your insurer's Internal Dispute Resolution (IDR) process first. If they don't respond within 30 days, or you're unhappy with their response, you can escalate to AFCA.

How much can AFCA award?AFCA's Rules set limits on the claims it can hear and the compensation it can award, with a separate limit for non-financial loss. The current limits are published on AFCA's website.
